The car that started the “four door coupe” craze now gets a station wagon/estate wagon/shooting brake – you choose what you want to call it. The original CLS was the “four door coupe”, what is Mercedes going to call this? I have a suggestion, how about a “really long 5 door coupe wagon thing”. And since we’re nice people at Unfinished Man, Mercedes, you have out permission to use that description in your marketing material.
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake is a very long car with the familiar low-slung roof from the CLS sedan coupe. The car looks awkward but I really like it for some reason. The low-slung back end looks like it has been filled with very heavy cargo and the rear bumper is about to hit the ground but it’s only an optical illusion.
According to Mercedes, the CLS Shooting Brake will not be available in North America, at least for now. The car will be powered by a choice of two gasoline engines: The CLS350 will be powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine that will produce 306 horsepower, the CLS500 will be powered by a turbocharged 4.6 liter V8 engine with 408 horsepower. The cars will also be offered with a choice of two diesel engines: a 2.1 liter 4-cylinder engine in the CLS250 CDI and a 3.0 liter V6 in the CLS350 CDI. The CLS250 CDI will be offered in a rear-wheel drive format only while the other models will be offered with optional 4Matic all-wheel drive.
The interior on the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake looks really luxurious and looks very nice. It’s a departure from the bland looking interiors on most of the offerings from Mercedes lately. The rear luggage space is pretty big with a weird looking opening, it’s offered with optional aluminum rails and wood panel floor.
