Where do you stand on having personalized number plates? Mentioning no names, but someone in the office recently bought some, and they are currently sitting out in the car park, as pleased as punch.
But, there is a divide in opinion in the office today, about whether private number plates are a good thing or not. It’s been an interesting conversation, so here are some of our most lucid thoughts on the subject.
Pro: it’s great for personal branding
If you want to be seen as the man about town, then all the attention you get is going to help you achieve your goals. So, it makes perfect sense to notify everybody of your presence when you are driving around. It works for business, too. If you are smart enough – and lucky enough – to find a plate that matches your company name, you have a cheap form of advertising on your hands.
Con: it can destroy any reputation you have left
There’s the bee’s knees on one hand, and thinking you’re the bee’s knees on the other. And, if you fall into that latter camp, then your reg numbers are going to attract attention for all the wrong reasons. It takes a certain personality to pull off a personal plate, and there’s a chance that you don’t have it. Ask all your friends and family what they think before you buy your plates. If they snigger, it’s best to write it off as a bad idea.
Pro: it can be a sophisticated look
Let’s be honest, a personalised number plate can look great on the right car, and with the right owner. Get the digits on that plate right, and it can give you an air of sleek sophistication.
Con: they can be far from sophisticated
In the wrong hands, on the wrong car, and with the wrong ideas, the personalised number plate can be nothing less than a joke. In some cases, it’s meant to be a joke – we get it. But it just isn’t funny, especially the second, third and fourth time you see it. There’s class, and there’s everything else. And, there’s a fine line to tread when it comes to your number plates.
Pros: you can get lucky
You often hear of the extortionate prices of personalised number plates, but now and then, you might get lucky. Keep your eyes on companies that sell cheap number plates, and you never know. You might find your perfect reg number for less than a ticket to the football.
Cons: you probably won’t
If you have a common name, then your perfect registration number is going to be in big demand. So, it makes sense that statistics suggests you probably won’t get lucky. You can make do with an alternative, of course. But, if you want your perfect plate, you are, most likely, going to have to reach deep into your pockets.
OK, so that’s all the salient points from our informal office discussion on private reg plates. Do you have them? Or do you know someone that does? We’d love to hear about any funny plates you have seen, so let us know about them in the comments section below. Just keep it clean, of course!
