The 2011 Land Rover Defender

About a week ago we wrote an article on the awesome and luxurious Land Rover Defender 90 Yachting Edition; that post turned out to be quite popular, which is understandable because of the awesomeness of the Defender.  Today we bring you the 2011 Land Rover Defender line-up.

The 2011 Land Rover Defender gets subtle styling updates, which will probably be only noticed by the die-hard Defender fans.  The 2011 Defender comes in 90 different variations with long and short wheelbase models.

As cool as the Defender is on the outside, on the inside it’s a different story.  The Defender is powered by a “not so awesome” 2.4 liter diesel engine that produces a wimpy 120 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque.  The horsepower numbers are pretty depressing considering how tough the Defender is but I guess the torque numbers some-what make up for it.  The diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and it comes with permanent four-wheel drive.

As expected, this heavy beast is pretty slow with a top speed of only 82 miles per hour (132 km/h) and a 0 to 62 mph sprint crawl in 15.9 seconds.  But then again, this is a true off road vehicle and is meant to go places where your average Hummer can only dream of.  The Defender can climb slopes of 45 degrees and descend slopes of 49 degrees and it can stay upright on slopes of 35 degrees, with ease.

The 2011 Land Rover Defender will stay in production until 2013, in current form and then a new more modern version will be released.  I’m hoping it will still retain the same shape and off road capabilities but with a lot more horses.  Hopefully Land Rover will do what Mercedes did with the G-Wagon, which has been updated continuously over the last five decades while retaining the same rugged shape.
