Earlier this year Volvo showcased their XC Coupe concept, a small SUV-type of a vehicle with two doors; which I’m guessing was a preview of the production XC90 SUV. The Swedish automaker has now unveiled the all-new production 2015 XC90 SUV, which looks pretty good in my opinion.
At first sight, the 2015 XC90 does look a bit like the BMW X3 with the face of a Volvo. The front design has been carried over from the XC Coupe concept, with T-shaped LED lights which the company calls “Thor’s Hammer”. The rear of the car is all Volvo, but it has been refreshed and looks quite modern.
The Volvo XC90 is powered by a turbocharged and supercharged (twin-charged?) 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine which produces an impressive 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Buyers looking for even more power can get the plug-in hybrid, which comes with the same engine gasoline engine, in addition to an electric motor, bumping output to 400 HP. This will be the world’s first 7-seat plug-in hybrid.
The Volvo XC90 is equipped with 4-corner air suspension with an electronically controlled damping system. Volvo also offers two world-first safety systems on the 2015 XC90: run-off road protection and auto brake intersection system. The run-off road system helps absorb energy during rough off-road conditions; the energy is absorbed by the seat frame and seat cushion. The auto brake intersection system automatically applies the brakes when the driver is about to pull out of an intersection where an oncoming driver is going faster than expected. Kind of a neat feature, I’ve pulled out in front of people on a few occasions, when I was expecting them to be slower than they were.
The interior on the 2015 Volvo XC90 is top notch; it has a very clean layout and looks very elegant; this is the type of an interior I can spend a lot of time in.
The 2015 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD will start at $48,900 in the United States. The company is also offering 1,927 limited edition vehicles, the 1927 denotes the year the company was founded, these limited edition vehicles are fully loaded and are priced at $65,900.
