Introduction to the 2024 Honda Prologue EV

2024 Honda Prologue Touring Collage

The 2024 Honda Prologue represents a bold step forward for Honda as it enters the fully electric SUV market, leveraging a strategic collaboration with General Motors. Built on GM’s advanced Ultium battery platform, the Prologue combines Honda’s renowned design and engineering expertise with cutting-edge EV technology. This move builds on Honda’s legacy as a pioneer in green mobility, dating back to the launch of the Honda Insight in 1999, one of the world’s first hybrid vehicles (the Insight was brought back for a few years before being retired again). This review examines how Honda’s partnership with GM and its rich history in eco-friendly technology have shaped the Prologue to compete in the fast-paced electric vehicle market.

The Prologue is Honda’s version of the Chevrolet Blazer EV. How well does the Honda Prologue compete in the rapidly growing EV market? Let’s find out.

Pricing and Trim Options

The Honda Prologue starts at $59,990 for the base EX trim, making it more expensive than some of its competitor, but the base trim comes with AWD, unlike the Korean competitors. Moving up to the EX-L AWD at $64,900 adds leather seats and a panoramic moonroof for extra comfort.

The range-topping Touring AWD model costs $69,900 and brings premium features like a digital instrument cluster and advanced driver-assistance tech. Each trim needs an extra $2,000 for destination fees, plus taxes.

The mid-size SUV keeps its core electric powertrain features across all models, making even the base version a solid pick for going electric.

Our review Prologue was the top-of-the-line Touring trim, with the only option of Raven Black paint for $300. The total vehicle price was $72,416 before taxes and incentives. Currently there is a lease bonus of $5,000 on this trim, other trims have lower discounts.

Incentives for zero-emission vehicles

Moving beyond the base model features, buyers can take advantage of some great money-saving deals on the Prologue. The federal iZEV program offers up to $5,000 in rebates for this all-electric vehicle.

Electric vehicle chargers installed at home may qualify for local utility incentives too. Some provinces provide extra incentives that stack with federal benefits, making the switch to electric more affordable.

The savings continue even after purchase through lower fuel costs compared to gas-powered SUVs. Some local power company gives special rates for overnight charging, which cuts operating expenses even more.

Performance and Powertrain

The Honda Prologue packs a punch with its dual-motor system that cranks out 288 horsepower and 333 lb-ft of torque, making it a real force on the road. Each axle gets its own electric motor, giving drivers better grip and control in all weather conditions. The Prologue has less power compared to it’s main competitor, the Ioniq 5 AWD, which has 320 HP and 446 pound-feet of torque.

The system splits power between front and rear wheels as needed, which means better traction on slippery roads. The AWD system makes the Prologue feel planted and stable. The instant torque from both motors creates quick acceleration from a standstill. GM’s Ultium platform supports this setup nicely, balancing power delivery with smooth handling.

Drivers can expect confident cornering and solid performance in snow, rain, or dry conditions. The regenerative braking system works with both motors to recover energy while stopping, helping extend the driving range.

Comparing the power delivery to the the Ioniq 5, which I reviewed the week prior, I found the Prologue to accelerate closer to a gasoline vehicle than to an EV. I found the Ioniq 5 to accelerate much quicker than the Prologue, the 5 has that instant acceleration. The Prologue is not slow by any means, but I felt there was a bit slower build-up of acceleration compared to the Ioniq 5 and other EVs I’ve reviewed. Maybe GM/Honda kept this acceleration profile to cater to customers that are just coming to the EV market? I don’t know.

Batteries, Charging, and Range

The Honda Prologue comes with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which bigger than the Ioniq 5’s 77.4 kWh pack. According to Honda, the Prologue EX and EX-L should be able to drive for 452 kilometers on a full charge (in ideal conditions). The range drops slightly, to 439 kilometers, on the Touring trim. Comparing the range to the top trim Ioniq 5, the Prologue has a slight advantage, the Ioniq 5 has a claimed range of 422 kilometers, however, it achieves this range with a smaller battery. The Ioniq 5 also comes with ultra fast charging 800-volt architecture.

My review took place in December, with temperatures in the mid-single digits, we’ll call it around 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit), on a full charge the onboard computer showed 439 kilometers, which is exactly the claimed number.

According to Honda, charging the Prologue on a 240-volt AC charger for an hours nets 54.9 kilometers of range. DC fast charging nets 101 kilometers in 10 minutes, they didn’t specify exactly what power the DC fast charger is.

According to NRCan, the Honda Prologue Touring should consume 21.1/25.0/22.8 kWh/100 kilometers in city/highway/combined driving. This translates to 2.4/2.8/2.6 Le/100 km.

In real world driving, after a week with the Prologue, the onboard computer showed 4.1 km/kWh, which translates to 24.39 kWh/100 km in about 60/40 highway/city driving, with full use of the HVAC system. Comparing the Prologue’s consumption to the Ioniq 5, my trip computer showed 20.3 kWh/100 km with pretty much the same driving conditions. The Ioniq 5 is significantly more efficient.

Exterior Design and Styling

2024 Honda Prologue Front

The Honda Prologue turns heads with its sleek, wind-cutting shape and sporty LED lights that wrap around its front end. I love how Honda mixed bold lines with smooth curves to create a modern SUV that stands out in parking lots without looking too flashy.

Aerodynamic features

The Prologue’s sleek shape cuts through the air like a hot knife through butter. The smooth front end slopes gracefully into a flat underbody, reducing drag and boosting range.

Active grille shutters open and close based on cooling needs, while the flush door handles stay tucked away until needed.

Every curve and angle serves a purpose – making this SUV as slippery as possible through the air

The side mirrors sport a slim profile to minimize air resistance, paired with special wheel designs that push air smoothly around the vehicle. My favorite aero feature sits at the back – a roof spoiler that manages airflow off the rear window.

These elements work together to create an SUV that’s both eye-catching and efficient, without looking too futuristic or strange.

Available color options

Beyond its sleek shape, the Honda Prologue shows off its style through paint choices. The color lineup matches the SUV’s modern electric character.

  • Platinum White Pearl – A bright, crisp shade that brings out the Prologue’s clean lines and makes the black trim pop against the paint
  • North Shore Blue Pearl – A deep, ocean-inspired tone that shifts between blue and green depending on the light
  • Liquid Carbon Metallic – A sophisticated gray that highlights the body curves and creates an upscale look
  • Crimson Pearl – A rich red that stands out in parking lots and turns heads on the road
  • Nimbus Gray Pearl – A neutral option that blends urban style with practical appeal
  • Lunar Silver Metallic – A bright metallic that sparkles in sunlight while hiding dust between washes
  • Black Crystal Pearl – A deep black with subtle metallic flakes that add depth and richness
  • Canyon River Blue Metallic – An electric-inspired bright blue that matches the Prologue’s zero-emission spirit

Each paint option comes with matched black trim pieces and wheel choices that create a complete package.

Interior Features and Comfort

2024 Honda Prologue Interior

I love how the Prologue’s cabin feels like a cozy tech hub with its mix of soft-touch materials and smart storage spots. The front seats cradle you just right during long drives, while the rear bench gives my tall friends plenty of room to stretch their legs.

Seating capacity and materials

The Honda Prologue seats five people with plenty of legroom in both rows. My test drive revealed decent comfort levels, though the rear headroom feels a bit tight for taller passengers.

The seats come wrapped in what feels like budget-friendly materials – not quite what you’d expect at this price point. The front row sports standard heated seats and a heated steering wheel, perfect for those chilly morning drives.

The Prologue’s interior space rivals the CR-V, but the materials left me wanting more.

The cabin needs better quality materials to match competitors like the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Still, the ventilated front seats (available on higher trims) work great during hot summer days.

The panoramic moonroof brings in plenty of natural light, making the cabin feel more open and airy. Let’s check out the impressive tech features packed into this electric SUV’s dashboard.

Panoramic moonroof and cargo space

Moving beyond the cozy seats, I love how Honda nailed the perfect blend of luxury and practicality in the Prologue’s interior space. The one-touch panoramic moonroof floods the cabin with natural light, making every drive feel open and airy.

Storage space stands out as a major win – 671 liters behind the rear seats gives plenty of room for golf bags or weekend gear. Fold those 60/40 split seats down, and the space expands to a massive 1,543 liters.

Smart storage solutions make this electric SUV super practical for daily use. A hidden compartment under the cargo floor keeps valuables out of sight, while the drainable underfloor storage proves perfect for muddy boots or wet beach gear.

My favorite feature? The flat cargo floor makes loading bulky items a breeze, no awkward lifting required.

Technology and Infotainment

I love how the Prologue packs a punch with its tech features. The 11.3-inch touchscreen display works smoothly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Honda Sensing keeps me safe with features like forward collision warning and lane keep assist.

11.3″ HD color touchscreen display

The 11.3-inch HD touchscreen display in the Honda Prologue stands as the crown jewel of its tech setup. This crisp display serves as the command center for all my entertainment and navigation needs.

The screen pairs smoothly with Google Maps and brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto right to my fingertips. The touch response feels quick and natural, much like using a high-end tablet.

The Prologue’s touchscreen interface marks a new era in Honda’s digital cockpit design – Motor Trend

The screen layout makes perfect sense with big, easy-to-tap icons and clear menus. Google Assistant responds to voice commands for hands-free control while driving. My favorite part? The display shows real-time charging info and nearby charging stations with just one tap.

Plus, the screen stays readable even in bright sunlight thanks to its anti-glare coating.

Honda Sensing® safety technologies

I’ve spent countless hours testing Honda’s latest safety tech in the 2024 Prologue. These advanced features make driving safer and easier for everyone behind the wheel.

  • Forward collision warning alerts me before potential front-end crashes through radar and camera sensors
  • Automatic emergency braking jumps into action if I don’t respond fast enough to collision warnings
  • Lane-keeping assist gently steers the Prologue back into its lane if it starts drifting
  • Adaptive cruise control maintains a set distance from cars ahead while cruising on highways
