6 Essential Items for Tech Geeks

Technology can greatly improve the way people work and play, but for some, technology offers more than just convenience. These people—these “tech geeks”—have made technology a part of their daily lives.

To be called a tech geek or a techie is actually a badge of honor because 1) they are usually up-to-date with the latest gadgets, 2) they are relatively faster in doing mundane activities due to their gadgets, and 3) non techies ask them for help on tech-related problems.

Of course, being a tech geek doesn’t mean much if you aren’t equipped with a lot of gadgets. That said, some of the most common and essential items for techies include the following:

Personal Computer

Laptops aren’t always as fast or as versatile as personal computers, and for most tech geeks, it’s better to have a PC at home rather than a laptop.

Those with the know-how can even assemble their own personal computer.

It’s actually better to assemble your own PC because it’s usually cheaper and you can customize each aspect of your computer by choosing its individual components.

Charging Station

Most devices today rely on USB compatibility. Thus, it is essential to have something like a USB charging station that can simultaneously recharge multiple devices.

It can be a lifesaver for those who have too many devices to maintain and those who have limited electrical outlets.

A regular USB charging station can have four to twelve USB ports and, sometimes, even more.

Laptop/Notebook

Sure, a personal computer can do a lot of things at home or at the office, but they have limited portability. A laptop or notebook is best for digital nomads or people who constantly bring their work with them as they travel.

The difference between laptops and notebooks is that the latter is smaller and, sometimes, less powerful. But most people today don’t bother distinguishing between the two and just refer them all as notebooks.

Also, a gaming laptop can be just as powerful as a gaming PC but is usually cheaper and is portable.

If you find laptops to be bulky, a tablet with a plug-in keyboard is another alternative, which can do most of the work you can do in a laptop.

Smartphones

In a study conducted by Pew Research Center in 2016, around seventy-seven percent of Americans own a smartphone.

Whether they’re using an Android or an iPhone, it’s hard for techies to live a life without a handheld device that allows them to connect to the Internet and communicate with people they know.

And smartphones can do so much more. They can help you learn a new language, track the number of steps you take, or find the best places to eat around the block.

Wireless Headset

Music calms the mind, elevates the mood, and makes you feel different kinds of emotions. Additionally, it’s better to listen to music when no wires are hanging around and choking you accidentally.

With Bluetooth wireless headsets, you can listen to music and make calls without having to worry about cables breaking.

Wireless headsets are also better to use when running or for people who are always on the move.

Portable Storage Devices

You’ll never know when you’ll need to copy files, so it’s always handy to bring a data storage device.

A flash drive or a memory stick is the most portable form of data storage. The common ones have 8 GB to 256 GB storage size, and the more expensive ones can hold up to 1 TB of files.

Another portable device is an external hard drive. They are more bulky than flash drives but have more storage capacity; the ones with 2 TB to 4 TB are more common, but some can have up to 16 TB in size.

What’s good about an external hard drive is that its high storage capacity and portability allows it to be used as a backup or an additional storage for other devices, like desktop computers and laptops.

Feeling Teched Out?

You can’t label someone a tech geek just because they own multiple gadgets; tech geeks also go the distance into making the most out of the use of their devices. They learn how to code, learn key shortcuts, tweaks, and hacks, and even how to bypass manufacturer specifications.

Access, knowledge, and passion are the key elements for a person to be able to use technology effectively.

Tech geek or not, everyone should know that technology exists for the betterment of people’s lives. Devices are good to own, but they were not created to dictate how people should live their lives.
