The all-new Porsche 911 Carrera (code named 991) has been on the roads for about a year now and the German sports car maker finally unveiled the racing version of the car, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, yesterday.
The new 911 GT3 Cup race car is based on the 7th generation 911 and like previous Porsche cup cars, the new one looks very similar to the road going version with a few changes, of course. The interior, on the other hand, is barebones (as one would expect in a race car) with none of the luxuries found on the road going car. The interior features a carbon fiber bucket seat, a full roll cage, a bunch of switches and buttons, and a digital gauge.
The 991 based 911 GT3 Cup is powered by a 3.8 liter flat-six engine, mounted behind the rear wheels. The boxer engine produces 453 horsepower, 10 more the 997 based car it replaces. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed transmission, shifting is done with the steering wheel mounted paddles, a first for Porsche cup race cars.
The 911 GT3 Cup rides on pretty sexy one-piece wheels that are wrapped in beefy Michelin tires; the front tires are 10.63” (27 cm) wide and the rear tires are 12.2” (31 cm) wide. Behind the wheels sits a new braking system with 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers with slotted and vented rotors.
If you’re looking to start a racing team and would like to enter one or two of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, you’ll need to fork out a cool €181,200 (or about $235,000 US). If you don’t plan on racing these cars, there will be a road going version of the 911 GT3 coming soon.
