McLaren Automotive adds another supercar to their portfolio, this time it’s the 720S Spider, based on the 720S Coupe. The Spider shares most of its looks with the coupe, with the addition of a removable hardtop. According to McLaren, the 720S Spider has the fastest operating hardtop in the supercar class, with the roof taking only 11 seconds to lower or raise, and it can be operated at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). The top can also be ordered as a glass panel, the electrochromic glass can be tinted/cleared at the touch of a button and automatically tints when the car is turned off.
The McLaren 720S Spider gains 49 kg (108 pounds) over the 720S Coupe, tipping the scales at 1,332 kg (2,937 pounds). Powering the sub-3,000 pound supercar is the 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic transmission. The end result is a convertible that can do the 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds and reaching a top speed of 212 mph (341 km/h) with the roof up and “only” 202 mph (325 km/h) with the roof down.
The 2019 McLaren 720S Spider will be available for purchase in March 2019 with a starting price of $315,000 in the United States.
