LEGO has a long history and most of it is surprising to those who have never researched the company. LEGO has humble beginnings in Denmark with Ole Kirk Christiansen’s wood working shop. The shop was originally opened in 1895 under a different name but Christiansen purchased it in 1916. It was in 1932, during the Great Depression, when Christiansen decided to make some changes and switch things up in the shop by producing toys. In 1934 the company started producing toys that children could put together or build themselves and the Lego name was decided upon and the brand was officially launched.
Early LEGO blocks were not what you would expect to see today. In fact, they were made out of wood. It was not until 1960 that the company switched and began manufacturing the bricks out of plastic. It was during the 1970s that LEGO really began to expand. During this time, the toys made it around the world. However, they also were able to come up with a vast line of products and assortment of toys. During the early part of the 1990s LEGO was not the popular toy that it had been before. In fact, sales declined so quickly that there was fear that the brand would go out of business. Thankfully with relaunches and a wide variety of new options that kept every child in mind, LEGO was able to be saved.
Today LEGO makes building block sets for everyone. There are Duplo blocks that are made for younger children and those just learning to build. Then there are LEGO bricks in every shape, size and color. There are sets that you can purchase to build specific structures or you can purchase the bricks alone to create anything that your imagination desires. There are even sets that are geared towards little girls which offer them the option to have their own LEGOs that they can be excited about.
