The Genesis brand is a luxury automotive marque established in 2015 as a spin-off from the South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Company. The Genesis brand is to Hyundai, what Lexus is to Toyota. However, the roots of the Genesis brand can be traced back to the Hyundai Genesis, a luxury sedan launched by Hyundai in 2008.
The Hyundai Genesis received critical acclaim for its design, performance, and value proposition. The success of the Genesis sedan encouraged Hyundai to consider creating a separate luxury brand. In 2015, the decision was made to spin off the Genesis nameplate into a standalone brand focusing exclusively on luxury vehicles.
With the creation of the Genesis brand, Hyundai aimed to compete with other luxury automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Lexus. The brand’s mission was to deliver high-quality vehicles with advanced technologies, elegant designs, and exceptional driving experiences.
Genesis First Models
The first model to debut under the Genesis brand was the Genesis G90 (formerly known as the Hyundai Equus) in South Korea, a full-size luxury sedan launched in 2015. The G90 showcased the brand’s commitment to luxury and refinement, offering a range of cutting-edge features and a comfortable interior. In the United States, Genesis launched the rebadged Hyundai Genesis as the G80 and the Hyundai Equus as the G90.
Genesis Additional Models
Following the G90 full-size luxury sedan and the Genesis G80 mid-size luxury sedan, the Genesis G70 compact luxury sport sedan was launched. All models were well-received by critics and buyers alike, solidifying the brand’s reputation for delivering premium vehicles.
In recent years, Genesis has continued to expand its portfolio, introducing crossover SUVs to meet the growing demand for luxury SUVs. Models such as the Genesis GV80 and the GV70 have been launched, offering a combination of stylish design, advanced technology, and impressive performance.
Genesis has also made a strong push into the electric vehicle (EV) market. In 2021, the brand unveiled the Genesis Electrified G80, its first all-electric vehicle. The Electrified G80 showcased Genesis’ commitment to sustainability and innovation, featuring advanced EV technology and a range of eco-friendly features. Genesis plans to go all-electric by 2030.
Genesis also introduced the e-GMP-based dedicated electric vehicle GV60 and added an electric version of their popular GV70 compact luxury SUV.
Throughout its short history, the Genesis brand has received numerous accolades and awards for its vehicles, including recognition for design, safety, and overall quality. The brand has established a strong presence in several key markets, including the United States, South Korea, China, and Europe.
