We got our first look at the all-new 2013 Mercedes SL Roadster late last year; to say we were disappointed with the car’s styling would be understatement of the year. Now we get our first look at the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG and unfortunately this one is as hideous as its less powerful sibling. I guess the SL is one of those cars that are beautiful on the inside.
And by “beautiful on the inside” I don’t mean just the interior but also the engine that motivates this beast. The 2013 SL65 AMG is powered by a 6.0 liter turbocharged V12 engine that pumps out 621 horsepower and a diesel truck-like 737 pound-feet of torque! The V12 is mated to a 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS automatic transmission with four modes: Manual (M), Sport (S), Sport Plus (S+), and Controlled Efficiency (C).
The 2013 SL65 AMG has been put on a bit of a diet and weighs 254 pounds (115 kg) less than the 2012 model, the car weighs 4,300 pounds and the weight loss is achieved by using an all-aluminum body shell. As heavy as the SL65 is, the stable of ponies under the hood more than make up for it and help the car accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.0 seconds and reach an electronically controlled top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Not that it matters in a car like this but according to Mercedes, the 2013 SL65 AMG gets a combined fuel economy of 20.3 mpg (11.6 liters/100 km).
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG will be showcased at the 2012 New York Auto Show and will have a starting price of €236,344 ($312,000) in Germany, Mercedes hasn’t announced US pricing but it should be a bit lower.
