I’m not too familiar with the German watchmaker A. Lange & Sohne; in fact, this is the first article I’m writing about them. The German watchmaker is known for their high-end watches and from what I gather, most of their watches don’t come with luminescent, making them hard/impossible to read at night. Their latest watch, the Grand Lange 1 Lumen, does come with that magical glowing stuff, hence the name “Lumen”.
According to my research, the A. Lange & Sohne Grand Lange 1 Lumen watch is not a totally new watch; it takes bits and pieces/ideas from other A. Lange watches.
One of the cool parts of the Grand Lange 1 watch is the smoked crystal dial that lets you see the full dials for the date function in addition to the date window; the full date dials are normally only seen by watchmakers as they put the watch together. The date dials are also covered with luminescent material and are charged with light that comes through the translucent crystal.
The dial is pretty simple with a large sub-dial for the minutes and hours on the left and a smaller dial for the seconds. There is a power-reserve indicator on the right side next to the trick date window. The hour markers and the minute, second, and hour hands are treated with luminescent material.
The A. Lange & Sohne Grand Lange 1 Lumen watch comes in a 40.9mm platinum case with a black crocodile leather strap. The watch is powered by an in-house hand-wound Lange manufacture calibre L095.2 mechanical movement with a 72 hour power reserve. The watches are limited to 200 pieces and will be unveiled at the SIHH show in Geneva in January 2013.
