2014 Infiniti Q50 Sedan, Formerly Known as G37

This year’s Detroit Auto Show is loaded with newly designed cars and here’s the all-new, completely redesigned, 2014 Infiniti G37 Sedan – I mean Infiniti Q50 sedan.  Infiniti recently came up with the “great” idea of re-naming their entire lineup of cars and SUV’s.  Starting this year, all their cars will have the letter “Q” followed by a pair of numbers; their SUV names will start with the letters “QX”.  Most people I’ve talked about this, don’t like the new naming structure one bit, we’ll see how it goes and whether it’ll create confusion among consumers.

The 2014 Infiniti Q50 sedan has completely new styling, yet it keeps some of the lines of its predecessor.  I was a big fan of the last generation G37 sedan, not so much the coupe, and I like most of the design of the Q50 sedan.  The car has fluid lines all over and is lower, wider, and longer than the G37 and has a pretty sporty stance.  The rear of the car reminds me of the M37 sedan (soon to be called Q70), the part I don’t like too much in the new design is the front fascia; still, it’s not as hideous as the front of 2014 Lexus IS sedan or the rear of the 2014 Corvette Stingray.  I find it strange that the last three cars I’ve written about, are designed very well but each comes with one major flaw (not as big of a flaw on the Q50) that takes away from the overall design, and I’m not the only one that has been complaining about these design flaws.

The G-series cars have always been pretty sporty cars and they’ve been compared to the legendary handling of the BMW 3-Series cars, we’ll see how the Q50 stacks up to it in the coming months.

The 2014 Q50 sedan is powered by the same 3.7 liter V6 engine found in its predecessor, producing 328 horsepower and 269 pound-feet (365 Nm) of torque.  Infiniti is also introducing a Q50 Hybrid that features a 3.5 liter V6 engine and a 50 kW electric motor with a lithium ion battery pack, producing combined horsepower of 354.  Both of these cars will be equipped with 7-speed automatic transmission with rev-matching.

The Q50’s interior is similar to the G37’s; with a center console that houses two large touch-screens.  The top screen features the standard display for the backup camera, navigation, entertainment system, and climate control.  The bottom screen is used to go through different menus to control the various functions using the Infiniti InTouch system.

Overall, I like the design of the new 2014 Infiniti Q50 sedan; it looks sporty and I’m expecting it to be a pretty fun car to drive.  If only Infiniti would do something about the front grill and the change the name back to G37.
