Budapest, the capital of Hungary… a place of rich history, beautiful architecture, and of course… amazing places for urban exploration, or urbex for short. When it comes to travel, exploring the hidden and often forgotten nooks and crannies of a new city is one of my favorite activities, and I hope to share a bit of my passion with you.
Today’s collection of photos were taken by a Hungarian urban explorer named, well… honestly, I have no idea. The entire page is in Hungarian (more on that later), and even using translation, well… it’s a little rough. So for the time being, consider these photos inspiration for your next adventure, but don’t wait too long… after all, these urbex spots really won’t last forever.
You shouldn’t have come here stalker!
If you’ve ever had a chance to play the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series of games, then perhaps you’ll agree that this looks like a scene straight out of the Exclusion Zone. Given that they both take place in Europe, well… I suppose that isn’t too surprising. The only thing missing is a telekinetic dwarf to start tossing things around.
Both the train and the building have seen better days. Can you imagine what this place must have been like during its heyday?
European factories and warehouses of yesteryear looked a whole lot more bad-ass than their North American counterparts. It seems that Budapest is no exception… just look at all those exposed metal beams. It’s almost enough to make a man blush.
And here’s the money shot… what a beast. I had the pleasure of riding on many trains during my visits to Europe, and they’ve always been a pleasure. Full of lovely drinks and incredible views. I bet this train was no exception… the Budapest countryside flashing past as the coal engine pulled this train along at dizzying speeds.
I wonder if someone could fix this up? With enough time, money, and love, it seems that just about anything can be repaired, even a rusted out old train like this.
When I was young, I had fantasies about living in a warehouse. I’m sure the apartments in Budapest are just swell, but if I lived there, it would be an old warehouse for me. I would fix it up real nice, and I could do whatever I want. There would be so much room for activities!

Flights to Budapest are rather inexpensive as of the time of this writing, and renting apartments there is also inexpensive. In fact, I would say it’s even less than the price of a hotel, and likely a whole lot more enjoyable. If you’re planning to stay for a while, I highly recommend it. That way you can hit up a wide range of Hungarian urbex locations. And speak of, visit this site for more information on this particular train yard. Just be aware… it’s entirely in Hungarian. Google Translate will work in a pinch, but if you happen to know someone that speaks the language…
