Let’s play a little game. The video below is a Japanese commercial for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, my latest gaming obsession. As you might expect, it’s entirely in Japanese. I don’t speak Japanese, and chances are good that you don’t either. So with that in mind, let’s try and guess what this promotional video is really about. Here’s why…
As you’re about to discover, the video doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. In fact, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is barely even shown during the 3+ minutes of the video. You’ll see someone playing it a bit on what’s clearly the special MGS:V Playstation 4 console, but that’s about it. Actually, it’s easier if you just watch the video for yourself. After that, I’l offer you a few of my thoughts on what’s really going on here.
Pretty unusual, right? Here’s what I think happened.
Either our intrepid gamer was seeing MGS:V in everyday life, or he was trying to emulate the game, or… both. That, or I’m completely wrong and this commercial had absolutely nothing to do with anything I just said. This video may be blatant to someone that speaks Japanese, but it’s extremely subtle to me.
What are your thoughts?
