2016 BMW M2 Coupe: The Spiritual Successor to the E30?

BMW M cars have been very popular with automotive journalists and enthusiasts, ever since they were introduced way back when. The most popular M model has to be the M3, however, over the years the M3/M4 cars have grown in size and weight. Enthusiasts still reminisce about the good old E30 M3, which was light and fast.

Well, fear not enthusiasts, the spiritual successor to the E30 is here, and it isn’t an M3, rather it’s the BMW M2, which replaces the 1M Coupe. The BMW M2 has big shoes to fill, let’s look at the specs below.

The new 2016 BMW M2 is powered by a 3.0 liter inline-6 engine with twin-scroll turbocharging, pumping out 365 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 343 pound-feet of torque between 1,400 and 5,560 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission. Manual transmission equipped cars reach 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, while the DCT equipped cars shave 0.2 seconds off that time, with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Visual upgrades include a more aggressive front bumper with large air intakes, which look similar to the ones found on the M4, the rear bumper also include a small diffuser and quad exhaust tips. The M2 is also fitted with wide fenders to house the 245/35 ZR 19 front and 265/35 ZR 19 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
