The Lazy Man’s Guide To An Eco-Friendly Lifestyle

I’m going to be honest, the last time I brought up green issues in the office, I had a tough time of it. There were the usual mentions of munching lentils, hugging trees, and tie-dye t-shirts, of course. And then, inevitably, the conversation moved on to Wayne Rooney’s continuing lack of form.

But, you know what? It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Because, deep down, I know I am having the last laugh. I’m not a vociferous follower of the green lifestyle, but there are plenty of reasons why I embrace it.

The first one is well known: it saves you a lot of money. But the second reason is that I am inherently lazy. And a green and eco-friendly outlook suits that approach to life entirely. Here’s why…

I don’t get stressed on the way to work

Being stressed all the time is hard work. And, when you have to drive to your job every day, there are plenty of stressful events that can happen, before you have even started your day. When I did drive to work, it was infuriating. The rush hour traffic, the numpties on the road – it all adds up to something I would rather not be involved with. So, these days, I take the bus and walk the rest of the way. It’s easy, and I get to do other things other than swearing at the cars in front and behind me. Why not give it a go?

My house isn’t a mess

I hate tidying up, and would rather watch a good movie or read a good book instead. Who doesn’t? But, I get the chance to do so more than most people I know because I don’t have to tidy up. I live a minimal lifestyle – and that includes minimum waste. Cut down on the junk that you buy, and the packaging it comes in, and you won’t have to tidy it up. It’s as simple as that.

I don’t need to change things

I tend to look at the environmental impact of everything I buy, including furniture, fixtures and fittings. And, as a rule, this kind of stuff tends to last far longer. A sustainable wood table from Green Woods will last you ten times as long as a cheap alternative from IKEA. And these LED light bulbs from Any Lamp last for eighteen years. How many lazy men does it take to change a lightbulb? None, if they are LED.

I can’t be bothered to cook

Well, OK – I can be bothered to cook. But only one or two days a week, max. And, on these days, I will use up all my ingredients to make meals for the rest of the week, meaning I don’t throw any food away. And, most importantly, it only takes me five minutes to heat and costs me five minutes worth of gas every night. Lazy? You bet. But you can’t deny that I’m saving time and money, too.

So, there you go – some pretty cool reasons for even the laziest amongst you to go green. It’s not hard, seriously. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s harder not to be green – why not give it a go?
