Running is my passion. Music is another passion, and I love to combine the two when I go out for my daily run.
Headphones are a real problem, though. Other guys who are runners will know what I mean. In-ear headphones are often uncomfortable. Wired headphones are impossible; the wires flap around and get tangled. Over-ear headphones are more comfortable in theory, but not while running – they get sweaty and often get jostled off of my head. I spend more time adjusting and holding onto my headphones than I do enjoying my run.
Another problem? You can’t hear. As much as I want to relax and get into the music, I need to be aware of what’s going on around me. Cars, bikes, and other pedestrians all pose a hazard and I can’t have my ears completely occupied with music.
Going Headphone Shopping
With these factors in mind, I hit the internet to look for a new set of headphones. I was determined to find some that were lightweight and wireless. A wraparound pair would be nice in order to avoid the discomfort of ear buds. I needed them to stay put on my head while being joggled and jostled and sweated on and…you get the point.
Sound was another important factor. I love my music and want to truly enjoy it when I’m running. However, I needed the design to be one that allowed me to hear ambient noise. If a bike is whirring up behind me or a police siren is warning everyone to clear an intersection, I need to know this.
With my seemingly-impossible list of musts, I started my search. I wasn’t very optimistic.
Checking All the Boxes with AfterShokz Trekz
After reading through review after review, one name kept coming up: AfterShockz Trekz. After reading up on them, I was convinced and ordered a pair. Here’s what I discovered as I unboxed them and tried them out.
First of all, Trekz are incredibly sleek and attractive. They wrap around behind your head with the speakers resting just in front of your ears, rather than sitting over them. The reason behind this is absolute genius: Trekz work through bone conduction technology, sending the noise through your cheekbones rather than your ears. This leaves your ears open to hear all the things going on around you.
Does this negatively impact the sound? Absolutely not. I buzzed through my entire running playlist on my first outing with them and was incredibly pleased with the deep base and amazing range. In addition to their great sound, they had no problem staying comfortably in place on my head.
Another plus? With Trekz Bluetooth connectivity and microphone, they’re not only wireless, but I can take care of phone calls without digging around for my phone. Their noise-canceling microphones mean that the person on the other end of the call could always hear me, even when I was jogging in the midst of noisy traffic.
For runners, cyclists, avid exercisers or athletes of any kind, I can definitely recommend AfterShokz Trekz. These are the last headphones you’ll ever need.
