There has been a lot of talk over the past few months regarding Porsche building a vehicle to rival the Tesla Model S and now they are one step closer to the real deal. Porsche Mission E concept has been built and made an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Using their experience in motor-sport racing and the 919 Hybrid racing program, Porsche has developed the electric drivetrain.
The Porsche Mission E is said to have over 600 horsepower, 500km driving range, 0-100km/h in under 3.5 seconds, and a super fast charge time of 15 minutes to reach 80 percent charge. All that power is sent to all four corners and there is an an all-wheel steering function available.
Porsche’s all-electric Mission E makes use of two electric motors which are very similar to those used by the endurance racer and allow this concept vehicle to reach 200km/h (124mph) in under 12 seconds! The Mission E features Porsche’s Torque Vectoring system which distributes the torque individually to each wheel and combine that with the all-wheel steering, and you get a vehicle that is fit for the race track. Porsche also claims that the Mission E is capable of lapping the Nurburgring in less than eight minutes.
The battery is mounted in the floor of the vehicle between the front and rear axles to distribute the weight in an efficient manner and to have a low center of gravity. The body of the vehicle is made up of aluminum, carbon fiber reinforced polymer, and steel. The wheels are entirely built with carbon fiber and measure in at 21-inches up front and 22-inches at the back.
The 15 minute charge to 80 percent can be achieved thanks to an innovative 800V technology. Modern electric vehicles including the Tesla Model S use half the voltage. By doing so, Porsche has been able to cut the charging times significantly while maintaining to keep the weight down as smaller gauge copper cables are sufficient to deliver the energy. With this charging system, the Porsche Mission E can get 400km of range with just a 15 minute charge while claiming that the vehicle can go over 500km on a full single charge.
The Porsche Mission E looks extremely sporty, classy, and recognizable as a Porsche. On the interior, there is seating for four in some very nice race bucket seats and a minimalistic, clean cabin space with the latest display screens and technology. You may have noticed, the vehicle also features rear suicide doors. As this is a concept, chances are that certain features will not make it to production. More details will be released in the coming weeks and months.
