Assassin’s Creed: Unity – 10 Minutes of Gameplay from Gamescom 2014

Since the leaked Assassin’s Creed: Unity content back in March, I’ve been wondering exactly what AC:U would play like. I’ve played pretty much all the AC games over the years, and I’m going to be pretty honest here, the franchise has gotten really stale.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag was a bit of an anomaly (it was different and fun), but again, let’s be honest… it was basically a pirate game shoe-horned into the Assassin’s Creed universe. Adding the assassins was completely superfluous, and myself and many others found that aspect of the story completely pointless.

In any case…

It’s obvious that Ubisoft is going to keep churning out AC games whether people want them or not, so they had better do a damn good job. That’s why I was so curious to see some actual gameplay footage from Unity, and it seems that today is my lucky day. Here’s a 10+ minute presentation from from Gamescom 2014 showing a Notre Dame mission complete with nonsensical hay stacks. You’ll see what I mean.

So, I’ve got a few observations:

1. Why does everyone speak with a British accent?
2. Why are their bails of hay inside of a church?
3. Why don’t NPCs notice their compatriots being killed right next to them?

Assassin’s Creed: Unity looks pretty great for the 1st generation of current generation consoles, but really… Ubisoft, you’ve been doing this stuff for a long time now, surely you’ve figured out ways to fix some of these glaring issues by now… right? I’ve read numerous interviews saying that the AI has been improved, and made far more deadly, but I’m certainly not seeing that in any of the footage I’ve seen.

I guess the world will decide when AC:U arrives on October 28th, 2014. I hope the game is as fantastic as it could be, but it looks like Ubisoft has a few more hurtles to clear before they get there.
