At long last, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is finally out. Millions of people the world over are playing the game, and though the release has been plagued with numerous bugs and performance issues, everyone seems to agree on one thing: AC:U is absolutely beautiful.
For those of you that are long time fans of the franchise, you’ve likely noticed the quantum leap in visual fidelity over the previous Assassin’s Creed games. The new generation of consoles have been good for the series, at least visually, and if this first attempt at “new-gen” is any indication, we can expect even more spectacular visuals as Ubisoft continues to churn out AC after AC.
But today, let’s focus on the characters. Senior Character Artist Vince Rizzi was kind enough to share some renders of his work over on ZBrushCentral.
The renders were all done using Mental Ray, with poly counts ranging between 25,000 to 30,000 per character. You can really see the fine details.
For the clothing, Vince started with a simple base mesh in Marvelous Designer, which he then imported into Zbrush to sculpt and modify, adding fine details like folds, creases, and tears along the way.
The end result? These amazing characters. Pictured above: Marquis de Sade, Quemar, and of course… Arno. They all look rather dapper.
I’m glad you’re not playing this particular character, though… I can’t imagine those clogs being very good for scaling the sides of buildings, you know?
I hope you’ve enjoyed these as much as I have. We all play these big budget games, but sometimes it’s nice to see what actually goes into them. Real people working long hours to come up with these incredible worlds for us to enjoy.
Apparently Vince is planning to showcase more of his work, so I’ll be sure to update this post as he continues to add it.
