Earlier this year Audi presented the RS4 Avant and now it’s time for its bigger brother to get the RS and Avant treatment. Today Audi released images and information on the all-new 2014 RS6 Avant (wagon).
Like the RS4 Avant, the Audi RS6 Avant is not your average grocery getter. It comes with space for lots of groceries but I doubt that will be the major reason for purchasing this vehicle, but if you do want to bring groceries from the store, you’ll do it faster than any of your neighbors.
The Audi RS6 wagon is powered by a twin-turbo TFSI V8 engine that’s also used in the A8. The turbocharged engine produces 552 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Nm) of torque, sent to all 4 wheels via a tiptronic 8-speed automatic transmission. The previous generation RS6 was powered by a V10 engine producing 571 HP and 479 lb-ft of torque. The V8 engine has a few less ponies but the new RS6 Avant is faster and more fuel efficient than the car it replaces. It uses a COD system (Cylinder On Demand) to reduce fuel consumption, the system shuts off 4 of the cylinders during normal cruising and at times when there is no need for all that power.
The 2014 Audi RS6 Avant reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, half a second quicker than the V10 powered RS6, and reaches an electronically limited top speed 155 mph (250 km/h). For those that need (or want) to go faster, the Dynamic package ups the top speed to 174 mph (280 km/h) and Dynamic Plus takes it all the way up to 190 mph (305 km/h).
The 2014 RS6 Avant is longer than the car it replaces, measuring 196” and has a cargo capacity of 59.33 cubic feet. The car is 220 pounds (100 kg) lighter and according to Audi, 40% more fuel efficient. According to the German carmaker, the RS6 Avant should get 24 mpg (9.8 L/100 km) combined; I highly doubt you’d get this kind of mileage even if you don’t drive like a maniac and I call complete BS on this claim!
The interior is typical Audi with high quality materials and great fit and finish. The car comes with comfortable looking leather bucket seats with contrasting stitching and a pair of bucket-type rear seats or a standard 3-person rear bench seat. The dashboard, center console, and door panels feature carbon fiber trim to give the car a sporty look.
The 2014 Audi RS6 Avant will go on sale in Europe in 2013 and unfortunately for North Americans, this car will not make it to showrooms here. No word on prices yet.
