Best Places To Visit in Portugal

Traveling is so much fun, but what’s even more fun is getting off the beaten path and going to places that aren’t filled with tourists and give you a real sense of wonder. Portugal is a beautiful country with so many amazing cities and towns, so there’s no shortage of incredible places to visit. However, while we love Lisbon and Porto as much as the next person, these cities are very touristy and aren’t going to give you the true sense of the country. Instead, try visiting one of these lesser known, but incredible, places in the country of Portugal.

The Azores

These days the Azores are a little less off the beaten path than they once were, but these archipelago is still incredibly stunning with clear blue water, stunning mountains and miles of pristine beaches and untouched forests. If that doesn’t sound appealing, we don’t know what will.

Sintra

Located just outside of Lisbon, this little town is colorful with amazing views of the ocean and awesome castle to explore. The best part about Sintra, is it’s super easy to do a day trip from Lisbon if you don’t want to spend the night but want to experience a little bit more of the countryside.

Nazaré

This is a traditional fishing village with an incredible beach scene and seafood that is truly to die for.

Comporta

This little village is also near Lisbon but you really escape from the busy and touristy aspect. Comporta is known by the locals as a great beach destination but because it’s not super well-known to the tourists, you can easily enjoy a quiet, local-filled day with clear blue waters and white sandy beaches.

If you’re looking to do a bit more exploring, it’s surrounded by rice fields and forests so you’ll have plenty to see.

Óbidos

This heritage village is a true European medieval village that you’ll never want to leave because it will draw you back in time. Cobblestone streets, amazing bakeries, shops that sell all manner of handmade items, narrow roads, castles and old homes. This little town that people totally forget about will suck you in and you’ll want to stay forever. Plus, the lack of crowds certainly makes it a more appealing destination.

Évora

Another smaller place that falls off the radar is Évora, one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country. This was a royal city and is over 2,000 years old. Palaces, wonderful squares, incredibly Roman architecture. We guarantee it’ll impress.

Portugal has so many beautiful things to offer so don’t forget to get out there and explore the true country, not just the big touristy cities. You certainly won’t regret it.
