A Brief History of… Microsoft Windows

I know from our server logs that most of you are Windows users, so let me ask you something: how long have you been using Windows? Do you remember what version you started using so very long ago?

I really sunk my teeth into computers in the Windows 95 era, when my parents were finally able to afford a computer. It was a glorious time, filled with computer games and pornography… the latter coming very slowly, so to speak. After all, we only had a 56K connection at the time! But the reason I’m mentioning all this is because I was recently reminded of just how long Windows has been a part of the computer landscape. That made me feel a little nostalgic, so I went and found this…

If you managed to sit through the entire video, bravo. I did too, and I’m not embarrassed to admit that, again, it made me feel extremely nostalgic, like the Windows equivalent of a Lana Del Rey song.

Speaking of music, the song you heard in the video was actually taken from Windows XP. If you can believe it, that was a “secret” song hidden away in the operating system. Now you know!

In any case, if you watched the video carefully – and honestly, even if you didn’t, it’s pretty obvious – you may have come to the same conclusion that I did: the current version of Windows, in many ways, is very similar to Windows 95. The work flow has changed little over the last decade. The elements are mostly the same, with a bit of spit and polish.

So the question is, will Windows 9 actually bring something new to the table? I don’t think it’s very likely that we’ll see a huge push for Linux on the desktop environment before Windows 9 hits the street, but with companies like Google making a massive push with Linux in the mobile space (Android is fully Linux based), then maybe, just maybe… we’ll see a complete Linux takeover in the coming years.

What are your thoughts?
