Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, you’ve probably heard of the Curiosity Rover landing on Mars, what you probably haven’t heard of is a Geneva based watchmaker, Cyrus. What does the planet Mars have to do with a watchmaker? Well, they just released a watch called Cyrus Klepcys Mars that features a Mars globe and the famous “Face on Mars”. I’m not sure if the timing of the release of this watch and Curiosity landing on Mars was planned or just a coincidence.
This is not the first time we’ve posted about a 3D planet on a watch, check out Greubel Forsey’s watch with the planet earth here, but this is the first watch based on the red planet. The Cyrus Klepcys Mars watch comes in two different cases, titanium and black DLC titanium, each watch is limited to 33 pieces.
The watches themselves are quite complicated and I respect all the hard work that went into making these masterpieces but they are quite ugly in my opinion, especially the cases. The cases are 48mm wide and the dials feature the red planet at the 4:30 position, the 3D sphere measures 7.6 mm in diameter and does a complete rotation every 24 hours, 37 minutes, and 22 seconds; the length of day on Mars based on Earth time (I’m sure Mars time is different ;)). At the opposite end, at about 9:30 position, is the “Face on Mars” depiction, starring back at you.
Although I don’t like the cases on these watches, I really like the way time and date is displayed on the dial. The hour function is performed by a retrograde dial on the left side of the watch with a “hand” pointing at the hours with two different colors for AM and PM. The opposite side of the same hand functions as the minute hand, pointing at a rotating disc with minutes on it. On the right side of the watch is another retrograde dial with numbers from 0 to 9, this is for the date. A rotating cube with the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3 points at the retrograde to show what date it is. For example, in the picture below, the pointer has the number “1” visible and is pointing at “6” on the retrograde, so it’s the 16th day of the month, I’m assuming on Earth.
If you would like one of these “out of this world” watches, you’re going to have to pay an out of this world price for them. The Cyrus Klepcys Mars watches are priced between 100,000 and 150,000 Swiss Francs, or about $104,000 and $157,000 US.
Nice article!
I had the opportunity to see the Cyrus Klepcys watch during a watch show in Paris and I can assure you that the level of competence is extreme.
The movement has been developed by Mr.Mojon one of the top watchmaker today.
In reality the watch looks fantastic and I am sure this new version is also terrific to look at !
The case was the only thing I didn’t like but I’d have to see in person. I’ll take one without any hesitation and wear it for life, if someone offered it to me 🙂
