Like most people, I’ve gone through musical “phases”, where I’ve listened to say, Speed Metal for a year… or strictly remixes for a few months. That kind of thing. Yes, my tastes have changed and adapted over the years, but there’s one genre that has out-shined all the rest, and kept my boredom at bay: mash-ups.
I think it was Girl Talk that really got me going so many years ago, but since then I’ve heard a ton of fantastic mash-up sets, primarily by local artists. But there’s plenty of room for talented mash-up artists in the big leagues as well, and Jack Conte certainly fits the bill with his latest Daft Punk Skrillex Remix. If you’ve seen Pop Culture by Madeon, well… it’s a bit like that, but not really. Kind of. You’ll see.
Jack Conte, Sans Skrillex’s Hideous Hair
Before we start here, I’ve got to ask you a question: what’s up with Skrillex’s hair? I’m rarely one to pick on people’s personal style choices, but man… just not very flattering. Anyway, on with the show…
Perhaps some of you will disagree with me on this one, but I find that what really separates a good DJ from a great one is the DJ’s ability to, you know… put on a good show. Sure the music can be awesome, but if they simply stand up there looking vaguely bored, well… just doesn’t get my rocks off like say, the video we just watched. Yes, I enjoyed it that much.
People like Gregg Gillis know how to put on a show. Any man who strips down to his underwear and dances on stage while doing his set is, well… a master DJ. A DJ above all other DJs.
Au Conte
If you’re interested in hearing more of Jack Conte’s work, then you can either go and see him in person (which would be a blast) or head right on over to his website and take a look around. Either way, you’re sure to be satisfied.
