Normally when a carmaker introduces a car, it’s followed up by upgrades and more powerful versions. This holds true in Porsche’s case, which keeps introducing a wide range of special models that are more powerful, feature different body kits, and are usually more expensive.
However, this time Porsche is introducing a less powerful version of their popular sports cars, the Cayman and Boxster, called “211”; as in Porsche Boxster 211 and Cayman 211; available in Norway and Belgium only. And the cars look identical to the base models these cars are based on.
Does the 211 have anything to do with the 911? Nope, the 211 is how many ponies are produced by the 2.7 liter flat-6 engine found on the base cars. The reduction in power is 54 less horsepower for the Boxster and 64 less for the Cayman.
With less power comes less responsibility and speed. The Porsche Boxster 211 reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.1 to 6.4 seconds, depending on which transmission and packages the car is equipped with, making it 0.6 seconds slower than the base Boxster. The Cayman 211 reaches 62 mph in 6.2 seconds, compared to 5.4 to 5.7 seconds for the base Cayman.
I think these cars were introduced to those two markets because of government regulation regarding fuel consumption and emissions. We do know these cars are slower, but how much of the fun factor is affected by the reduction in power? The good news is the cars are about $10,000 cheaper than the base models.
