There’s little point going on a date if you are not going to enjoy it and in order to enjoy it, you both need to have a good time. How you dress is the key factor in getting the date off to a good start. They will make a series of judgements about you in the first seven seconds of your meeting and those judgements are based entirely on your appearance. Make a bad impression and you’re going to spend the rest of the evening trying to get them to revise their opinion, make a good impression and you can get straight down to having a good time.
Getting ready
Many women take a lot of trouble over their appearance before going out on a date and so should you. Being well dressed is a demonstration of respect for the person you are meeting and although they might not articulate that, they will recognize it at a subconscious level.
Getting dressed for a date is also crucial to your frame of mind. You feel confident because you have taken care with your appearance, so that once you are on the date you can forget about what you look like and enjoy the conversation. Whatever clothing you decide on, get the basic hygiene right first. Well-groomed hair, well-manicured nails, freshly showered body.
Location appropriate clothing
Looking smart does not mean that you have to dress as though you are attending a wedding. Over-dressing will make both you and your date feel uncomfortable, as much as will under-dressing. Do not rush out and buy fashion items that you would not normally wear, you’ll end up embarrassing yourself and them.
Dressing appropriately is a demonstration of your social skills and will help put your date at her ease. You need to wear clothing that looks good on you, clothing which is a good fit, which is clean and well pressed. Don’t confuse casual with sloppy. Layer your clothing so that you can feel comfortable. Being too hot or too cold is a distraction that you don’t need.
Accessories
Women often have a better developed sense of dress than most men and they notice detail. A woman will certainly notice the shoes that you are wearing. Make sure your shoes are smart, in keeping with the rest of your clothing and that they are clean and polished.
If you are going to be outside in the sunshine, then a pair of sunglasses will save you from looking like a squinting Quasimodo. She will certainly check out your eye wear, so go for a good quality pair. Don’t wear mirrored sunglasses, they’re intimidating and don’t wear your sunglasses all evening, they are a barrier to intimacy, so take them off and hang them on your blazer pocket at the first opportunity.
A simple and stylish watch is a fine finishing touch to an outfit and will certainly be noticed. Be understated in all things, it shows taste. A little cologne is fine but again it shouldn’t be too discernible.
The last thing, and perhaps the most important thing too, is to relax and be yourself. Good luck and enjoy!
