The common argument a lot of drivers have when it comes to driving while drunk is, ‘I live just two minutes down the road’. This argument or any similar ones, do not excuse your choice to drive when under the influence of alcohol. The truth is, at one point or another, we’ve all considered it. The thought process that runs through our heads goes something like this; I’m not that drunk. My house is just a two-minute drive away. I can make it home safely.
Let’s face it, even if you make the decision to drunk drive and make it home safely; that doesn’t make it right. The fact is, when you put your keys into the ignition of your car and drive after having one too many beers, you’re putting yours’ and other’s lives at risk. A lot of us aren’t aware of exactly what the dangers of drink driving are, apart from the obvious, of course. So, let’s investigate what the effects of drink driving are and why we should never consider doing it.
The embarrassment
Have you ever wondered how upsetting and embarrassing it would be to make the front page of your local newspaper? Well, if you get pulled over by the police and they find that you’ve been drink driving, that could be what happens. Admittedly, in relation to the other, more serious effects drink driving can cause, a story about you in your local paper seems harmless. The truth is it’s far from it. Think about it – do you really want your boss, neighbors, or friends to see that you’ve been drink driving? You could lose your job, respect in the local community, and your friends.
You could hurt yourself or someone else
When you’re driving under the influence of alcohol, your judgments and reaction times are not as good as normal. Say, for instance; you’re waiting at a junction in your car. You see a lorry coming, but because you’re drunk, you think you’ve got time to get out onto the road. You think wrong and your car rams into the lorry, leaving you seriously injured. Or, say for instance, because you’re drunk you’re not paying as much attention to the road as normal. And so, you fail to see a mother and child crossing the road ahead. By the time you see them, it’s too late, and your car plows into them, injuring or killing them. Ask yourself, could you live with that?
End up in jail
If one of the above scenarios were to take place, or even if it didn’t, and you were simply caught drunk driving, you could be sent to jail. You would then need to hire a lawyer, such as Mace Law for DUI representation, and make your case in court.
Even if you weren’t sent to jail, your whole life would be ruined as the entire local community would be aware of what you had done.
Your whole life could change
Do you like the life that you’ve got? Yes – then don’t drink and drive, it’s as simple as that. If you drink and drive and get caught, you could lose everything, from your freedom to your friends. Ask yourself, is the cost of a cab or a short walk home that bad that you’d rather risk everything and drunk drive? Of course you wouldn’t, so why are there so many cases of drunk driving reported each year? The answer: because people rush to make a decision that they will later regret – don’t be one of them.
No matter what, regardless of how close to home you are or how ‘sober’ you feel, if you’ve been drinking, don’t drive. It’s really not worth the risk.
