When people talk about living off the grid, you generally think of a hippie or tree-hugger type person. I know, these stereotypes are not nice. To some people, living off the grid means getting away from technology but very thing they get away from can actually make living off the grid a lot easier. Take the Ecocapsule as an example.
The Ecocapsule is a 14’x7’x7′ pod which is referred to as the “first truly independent micro-home” is a smart home powered entirely by the sun and the wind. Because of its size and 1500kg weight, you can take the micro-home just about anywhere. It can be hitched to remote locations, transported by air, and even packed away in a standard shipping container.
Ecocapsule Floor Plan
The Ecocapsule is a low-energy home which uses its shape to its advantage allowing compact volume and off-grid capabilities with luxuries such as running water, kitchenette for cooking, storage space, and a comfortable bed. Despite its compact size, the micro-home can comfortably house two adults. The Ecocapsule is powered by a built-in wind turbine and an arrangement of solar cells on the roof of the building. This dual power system and a 9.744 kWh battery will ensure you have enough power in unfavorable conditions when there is a reduction in solar and wind activity.
Ecocapsule Living Space
The interior walls feature high performance thermal insulation padding which helps in reducing energy requirements as well as maintaining a comfortable temperature. A working toilet and shower is always a welcome feature.
Another Interior Shot
The spherical shape also helps in the process of collecting rainwater and dew which is stored in a tank underneath the floor. All that rainwater is filtered using membrane water filters in the upper surface of the capsule removing any pollutants from the water. The built-in water filters allow you to use any water source.
This Ecocapsule looks like it would be ideal for organizations that do research and exploration in remote locations, people that want to live off the grid, or for those that want to go for an extended holiday but away from the masses. The Ecocapsule will be available for pre-orders later this year and delivery is expected to start in the first half of 2016. Check the Ecocapsule website for more details. This micro-home will also be making an appearance this week at the Pioneers Festival in Vienna on May 28th and 29th.
