I’ve been on a bit of a minimalist shoe kick lately. I’m a big fan of minimalist shoes, and though I’ve tested and reviewed quite a few over the years, I’m always looking for something better. Are these FYF (Free Your Feet) ‘sock shoes’ the ultimate in minimalist footwear? Their 3,913 backers sure think so…
Made out of Dyneema, an ultra strong material with 15x the tensile strength of steel, these sock shoes are light, flexible, and more than strong enough to handle any level of abuse you could throw at them. If they’ve engineered these shoes as well as I believe they have, then they’ll be the holy grail of minimalist footwear.
What’s a Sock Shoe?
Each new minimalist shoe I’ve worn has been lighter and more flexible than the last, and really… you can’t get much closer to barefoot than something akin to a sock Here’s their Kickstarter video. They’ll show you what the sock shoe is ideal for (hint: sports of all kinds), and they’ll talk a little bit more about their decisions to use Dyneema, the inspiration behind the shoe, and plenty more.
I’ve actually known about the Swiss Barefoot Company for years, but held off ordering a pair of their last generation, Kevlar based sock shoe, because I read that it scratched up wood floors quite a bit. Not a very good reason, but it made sense at the time. This time, I’ll be picking up a pair the moment they ship this November, 2015.
