Golf is not as simple as many people think; many factors can affect how your shots pan out, and you have a million things to consider when you take your position. Other than that, there is a lot of equipment you have to keep in mind such as your golf clubs, golf bags, and golf carts. Playing golf is a constant learning experience, and sites like Skilled Golf are ideal for those looking for more in-depth guidance with their game but in the meantime, if you’re a beginner or looking for some practical pointers, here are our top tips that every golfer should know.
With all the movement and agility you will need to become that pro-golfer this summer, comfort clothing is imperative. Golfing kit bags should have sunglasses, and anti-burn sunsprays. Plus, your sunday swagger golf polo shirts will provide that comfort to ace every spin in the hot summer weather.
Your grip
Your grip determines the contact of the club with the ball, and you can find some further advice on interlocking, overlapping, or ten-finger grip, but the basics are this: ensure that the club is resting on the heel of your trailing hand’s palm and let your fingers do most of the gripping. There should be no space between your hands, and your tailing thumb should go along the length of the club with your leading hand over the top.
Ball position
The golf ball does not always have to be in line with your club; you can place it relative to your stance. This helps you to get shot variation in golf because of the club’s loft (which helps when using fairways to get on the green.) Additionally, you can use the line or markers on the golf ball relative to the flag and position it accordingly.
Reverse K
Now that you have a firm grip on your club, the best way to get into the teeing position is by bringing your club to the ground with your arms straight. Stand with your back and legs straight, then bend forward using your hips and keeping your back and arms straight. Then relax, bending your knees very slightly to get into position. These tips will help you get into the reverse K position – keeping your lead side straight and your spine angled slightly away from the hole. It is a good position to start your backswing as it prevents your hips from pushing away from you when you swing your club upwards.
Backswing
Once in the reverse K position, keep your back straight and rotate your body to get the required power from your core instead of just your arms, putting you in an excellent position at the end of your backswing.
Slicing
A common mistake golfers make is dragging the club away from the ideal swing path when bringing it upwards during the backswing. Then they have to correct this by opening the clubface on the downswing, causing the golf ball to go away from the intended line. A good trick to prevent this is to imagine a plane running along the length of the club and when you swing, make sure your club slices within this plane. When you take your club upwards during the backswing, you will see that the clubface mirrors the angle of your back when horizontal. This can be good as a reference point to enable you to see if your club remains within the plane.
