Though I sometimes like to think otherwise, I’m not actually a rockstar. No one follows me around trying to get that illusive photo of me wearing a bathing suit, and though I work hard to protect my privacy, I probably have a bit less to worry about than someone like DJ Chris Holmes.
Having said that, I have a fascination with the intersection between privacy and technology. I also happen to “love” clothes in the sense that I enjoy exploring new styles, materials, and manufacturing techniques. That’s why I find this line of reflective clothing so interesting!
DJ Chris Holmes Had an Idea…
I’m sure he’s actually had many ideas, but this one in particular culminated in a brand new clothing line called the Flashback Collection.
After wearing reflective clothing to several performances, I noticed that photos from those shows always looked odd, because the flash that bounced off my clothing would obscure most everything else.
While I wasn’t thrilled that many of these photos were ruined, it gave me an epiphany: Perhaps I could use this technology for a greater purpose — like making paparazzi photos worthless.
Pretty clever, right? The fabric he chose is actually coated with “glass nanospheres” which reflect back massive amounts of light from a camera’s flash. So much light, that the photo is basically ruined.
Here’s a video explaining in a bit more depth.
While I’m not in a huge hurry to swap out all my clothes for nano coated reflective pieces, I could definitely see myself wearing one of the scarves from time to time. Simply put, they seem interesting, and I like novel technologies.
If you’re interested in finding out a little bit more about the Flashback Collection, you can head over to the Betabrand website and have a look around. Chris Holmes apparently teamed up with them to produce the line, which is a good choice in my humble opinion. They do some very cool pieces.
