Maximilian Büsser and Friends (MB&F) have been producing some of the wildest timepieces we’ve ever seen; their watches look like they came from the future with more of an emphasis on making them look like sculptures rather than time telling machines. New for 2011 is the MB&F Legacy Machine No. 1 watch, which is a departure from their futuristic design and is actually a look back 100 years ago and what a watch, designed by MB&F, would look like if designed back then (so in other words, go back 100 years and then imagine a watch that will be produced a 100 years later).
The first thing you’ll notice about the MB&F LM1 is that it has a straight forward design with the hour and minute hands placed on the left dial and right dial for two different time zones. According to MB&F, this is the first watch that can have two completely separate times set up, down to the minutes. At the bottom there is a vertical power reserve indicator that goes up and down, another first. The watch dial features three-dimensional elements with a balance wheel suspended over the two small dials, the inspiration for which came from the Eiffel tower and the two dials take their inspiration from pocket watches.
MB&F has a very cool video on their website explaining the watch and the inspirations for it, it’s a must see for any true luxury watch fan (click here).
The Legacy Machine No. 1 may take its visual cues from 100 years ago but at the heart of the watch is state of the art mechanical hand-wound movement that consists of 279 components and 23 jewels with a 45 hour power-reserve. The MB&F Legacy Machine No. 1 is priced at $92,000 and is the first of many watches that have a retro theme to them.
Can this be categorized under “Steam Punk” style?
I would say yes.
