Not long ago, the Unfinished Man team got a chance to test drive the Mazda MX-5 Miata for a week. It was a fun little car and our complaints about the vehicle was the $40,000 price tag in Canada and the 167 horsepower which really needs to be increased. In our review, we wished that it was at least 200 horsepower and looks like our prayers have been answered. But it’s not Mazda that’s responsible for this but performance tuning company, BBR.
Their ‘Super 200‘ tuning package gives the Mazda MX-5 Miata 201 horsepower without having to resort to forced induction like turbochargers or superchargers. The tuning package is compatible with 2005 onwards Mazda MX-5 Mk3, 3.5 3.75 (NC) models and is able to squeeze out an additional 43 horsepower and 19 lb-ft of torque from the 2.0-liter motor. The final horsepower output may vary from model to model since the stock 2005 Miata produced less power than the current 2014 model.
The Super 200 tuning kit features a stainless steel four into one exhaust manifold, a high flow panel air filter, high-performance intake and exhaust camshafts, a 3.5-inch diameter tailpipes, an ECU engine remap, and a number of BBR badges on the vehicle.
According to BBR, their in-house dying testing showed that the Super 200 upgrade package boosts the peak power to 201 horsepower at 7,450 rpm which is at 180hp at the rear wheels. Although the peak power is at a very high rpm range, the standard power output is also exceeded at every point in the rev range with strong gains from 3,000 rpm and upwards. The peak torque is also increased to 166 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, which is 1,100 rpm lower than the stock vehicle. The power increase should be felt by the driver even in everyday driving without having to redline the vehicle.
Unfortunately, BBR has not released performance numbers such as 0-60mph dash and top speed increases. According to them, the Super 200 package “feels much quicker and far more willing, eager and exciting to drive than ever before”.
The Super 200 tuning package for the Mazda MX-5 Miata is priced at $3,684 with installation or $2,845 for a DIY version. The package will be available through a limited number of Mazda dealers in the UK. If a 201hp Miata isn’t good enough for you, the company also has limited edition turbocharged Miatas which will deliver 268 horsepower. For more details, check out BBR Tuning.
