Maximilian Busser & Friends (MB&F) introduced the Legacy Machine No. 1 (LM1) watches in 2011 and now they’ve created a new version of this stunning timepiece. MB&F teamed up with Chinese artist Xia Hang to create this special edition watch, featuring an animated power reserve display sculpture.
The only difference between this watch and the original one is the little statue designed by Xia Hang, which replaces the little power-reserve lever that would go up and down as the watch was wound up and as it used up the power reserve.
I can’t quite put my finger on what the little sculpture is supposed to look like; it looks like part Buddha, part seal (the animal from the ocean), part E.T., and the “head” looks like a pair of testicles. I really like MB&F watches but this little man-thing is just too weird looking. As the watch uses up the power-reserve, the sculpture bends down and moving its head down to the base, as if slumping over because of a lack of energy. To bring it back to life, just wind the mechanical movement and you’re back in business.
I’m sure it was quite a feat to create this little sculpture, as it measure only 4 mm tall and is made out of aluminum and is three different pieces. The watch also comes with a 6 inches tall sculpture, called “Mr. Up and Mr. Down”, signed by the artist.
Only 24 of the MB&F Legacy Machine No. 1 Xia Hang watches will be produced, 12 in white gold and 12 in rose gold; each watch is priced at 99,000 Swiss Francs or about $111,000 US at today’s exchange rate.
