MB&F Melchoir: A High-End Robot Table Clock

One of my absolute favorite watchmaker is Maximilian Busser & Friends, also known as MB&F. I love the incredible watches the company comes up with, which are the creations of the company’s founder Max Busser. I also have a man crush on Max because of his “kid at heart” approach to his work and his fascination with robots and spaceships.

July 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of MB&F, to celebrate the occasion, the watchmaker teamed up with L’Epée 1839, a Swiss high end clockmaker, to create the limited edition Melchoir robot table clock.

Melchoir looks like a robot from the 60’s or 70’s, a toy that would be on the wish list of any child in that era or even a cartoon character. Again, using the “kid at heart” design philosophy on the robot, the company has a good way to describe this: “A creative adult is a child who survived”.

The MB&F Melchoir table clock is limited to 99 pieces and comes in two varieties, “Light” and “Light and Dark”. It’s constructed out of high end materials with beautifully finished steel and brass armor. The robot consists of 480 components and displays the hours and minutes on a pair of disks placed on the chest. The “skull” is covered with domed sapphire crystal, giving us a view of the “brain” or the regulator. The eyes consist of double retrograde seconds disks that mark off intervals of 20 seconds.

The Melchoir robot clock was designed by Maximilian Busser and Xin Wang; the robot has moving arms and comes with a rocket launcher and a Gatling gun. The Gatling gun can be removed and used to adjust the time and wind the mechanical movement. The movement is a high end L’Epée clock movement with 40 days of power reserve, which is indicated on the abdomen of the robot.
