Fans of McLaren cars may remember a Long Tail version of the iconic F1 supercar. McLaren has brought back the “LT” nameplate back to life in their “new” sports car, the McLaren 675 LT.
The “new” car is not so new, it’s based on the 650S, which was also not very new and was based on the already existing McLaren 12C, which was formerly known as MP4-12C. Confused yet?
The 675 Long Tail is a lighter, faster, and more powerful version of the 650S, it’s aimed at people that enjoy taking their cars to the track and really testing out the limits. The 675 LT is 220 pounds (100 kg) lighter than the 650S, tipping the scale at 2,711 pounds dry. The twin-turbo 3.8 liter V8 engine now produces 666 horsepower and 515 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 25 HP and 15 lb-ft of torque over the car it’s based on. The 675 LT sprints to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.9 seconds and reaches 124 mph (200 km/h) in 7.9 seconds and tops out at 205 mph (330 km/h).
The McLaren 675 LT sees minor updates to the front and rear, the rear-end has been cleaned up a bit, and looks better than the 650S rear end, in my opinion. Unlike the original Long Tail, this car doesn’t really come with a real long tail, instead, the air brake/spoiler size has been increased by 50%, hence the name Long Tail.
The McLaren 675 Long Tail will be officially unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March.
