Is The New Commander Shepard of Mass Effect: Andromeda a Woman?

It’s been a few years since the release of Mass Effect 3, a long time to go without another sequel. I’m not complaining, mind you; if Bioware wants to take their time with Mass Effect: Andromeda, I’m happy to wait and reap the benefits of a well polished game at the end.

But I’m getting ahead of myself here…

What do we actually know about Mass Effect: Andromeda? Honestly, not a whole lot. They’ve been quiet on details for the most part, but today… today we get a little peak, a teaser, into this new world. The teaser doesn’t show us a whole lot, but in my opinion, what it does tell us is that the new Commander Shepard is going to be a woman by default.

If this is true, I’m happy to see it. As you might have noticed, the games industry has seen a bit of a gender shake-up over the past year. Since the public outcry over the lack of a playable female character in Assassin’s Creed: Unity, we’ve seen a wave of games arriving, all featuring strong, playable, female characters.

Personally, I would be thrilled to see more ladies playing games. Gruff bald men in military fatigues is getting a little old, let’s change things up a bit. Right? Right.

Of course, I could be wrong. After all, we haven’t actually seen an image of the new Shepard, but in any case, we’ll find out sooner or later. In the mean time, here are a few more pieces of concept art:

The release date for Mass Effect: Andromeda is currently unknown, but you can be sure to hear about it here first the moment these details are released.
