Automobiles (and motor racing) and watches are my biggest passions in life, and it seems a lot of other guys appreciate these two hobbies as well. We’ve written quite a few articles on automobile inspired watches and here’s the latest, the Oris Calobra watch collection; consisting of two limited edition models.
Oris watches is the title sponsor of the classic car rally, Rally Clasico, which takes place on the island of Mallorca, Spain. The watch maker has been sponsoring the rally since 2012 and this year has introduced the Oris Calobra Chronograph Limited Edition II and Oris Calobra Day Date Limited Edition II watches. Both watches feature dials inspired by the gauges from cars from the 1960’s and 1970’s.
The name, Calobra, pays homage to one of the villages on the rally course, which features a road that does a 360 degree turn, going under itself. The road was designed by Italian engineer Antonio Parietti in 1932, and an image of that road, called Nus de sa Corbata, is engraved on the caseback of both models.
Both watches come in 44mm stainless steel cases with black leather straps or stainless steel bracelets. The watches come with dark green ceramic rotating bezels, this color is also inspired by cars from that era.
The Oris Calobra Day Date watch has a simple dial with the day window above the 6 o’clock marker and the date window next to the 3 o’clock marker. These watches are powered by Oris caliber 735 (based on Sellita SW220) automatic movements with 38 hours of power reserve and are water resistant to 100 meters. These watches are limited to 1,000 pieces and are priced at 1,900 Swiss Francs (or about $1,893 US) for the leather strap version and 2,100 Swiss Francs ($2,093 US) for the stainless steel bracelet version.
The Oris Calobra Chronograph watch adds the three subdials for the chronograph complication and the date window has been moved to the 6 o’clock position. These watches are powered by Oris caliber 676 (based on ETA 7753) automatic movements with 42 hours of power reserve and are water resistant to 100 meters. The chronograph watches are limited to 250 pieces and are offered with leather straps only, priced at 4,000 Swiss Francs ($3,986 US). Via: Oris
