Phylogeny Of Mammalian Families – Phylogewhat?

If you’re at all interested in evolution, and specifically the evolution of animals, then you may find this massively detailed phylogeny poster pretty interesting. Originally posted as a paper in Sciencemagazine, this is the most complete phylogeny of mammalian families ever created. Phylogeny is the study of evolutionary relatedness among groups of organisms. If you zoom into the image, you’ll see a slew of interesting information, such as the fact that there are so many damn species of bats. You’ll also notice that there’s a creature called a Tarsier which has an extremely awesome face.

You’ll probably have to view the larger version of the poster to see the details, but it’s well worth a few minutes of browsing around. You can view the large version by clicking the image below.

You’ll find plenty of interesting findings on Why Evolution Is True, the website that originally posted this phylogeny poster. The author is substantially more knowledgeable than I am about such things, and he/she goes into far more detail about how to decipher the information on the poster, what the information means, and why sloths are awesome. Honestly, who doesn’t like sloths?
