About a year ago we wrote about the very unusual Ressence Type 3 watch, created by a Belgian industrial designer and watchmaker, Benoit Mintiens. For a follow up to that watch, they’ve now released the Ressence Type 1 watches.
The idea here is the same as the Ressence Type 3; in summary, the Type 1 watch doesn’t have tradition hands, instead it uses stationary painted hands on the dial. Instead of the hands moving in a clock-wise direction, the minutes, hours, date, and day discs rotate in a counter clock-wise direction as time passes by. You can read about the exactly how everything works, in our detailed post on the Ressence Type 3 watch here.
There are a few minor differences between the two watches. The new Type 1 watch is a bit less cluttered because of the removal of the disc that had the 31 days of the month on it. The sub-dial for the seconds has 12 index markers instead of numbers and the day of the week sub-dial gets a bit of a different visual treatment, but is essentially the same.
Unlike the Type 3, the Ressence Type 1 watches come in 5 different finishes and I believe they are not limited edition. The watches come in the following colors/finishes:
- Type 1B: This watch comes with a black dial with white indices that glow green in the dark with its SuperLumiNova treatment.
- Type 1W: This watch comes with a white dial and dark grey SuperLumiNova indices.
- Type 1Ch: This watch comes with a champagne dial with white and black indices.
- Type 1R: Ruthenium- this watch comes with a metallic sunray grey dial and white indices that glow green in the dark.
- Type 1G: This watch comes with a silver metallic dial with guilloche background and blue hands.
