As mentioned in a previous article, we talked briefly about the Rif6 Cube. If you didn’t read this post and also didn’t know what it was, then here’s a short summary for you. It’s essentially this handy little gadget that is a mobile projector and can connect to your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or whatever and put it on a 120-inch screen. That’s pretty awesome. Because this cube is so cool we’ve decided it deserves a whole post to itself.
Made of aluminum and retailing around $270, it’s not cheap, but when you consider that you’re getting a 120-inch screen out if and if you were actually buying a screen or projector of that size you’d be probably looking at a price in the thousands. What’s so cool about this item is how tiny it actually is for what you get out of it. It’s about the size of a small lemon and weighs just under 2 pounds. That’s pretty miraculous for something that gives you a full on projector screen of that size.
It comes in a sleek silver color and a great stand you can use for your tablet or phone or whatever you’re using to show on the screen. This would probably work best in conjunction with a set of really great speakers, and there is a headphone jack on the cube that you can use to plug in a stereo system, so you’ve basically got a ready-made cinema in your house all for under $300.
It claims to have only 50 lumens of light, but reviews say that this is actually surprisingly bright for being such a small amount. Regardless, if you’re watching something or showing friends something, you’re likely to be in a dark room anyway so this shouldn’t particularly affect you or make a difference to the way you use it.
The only downside is the battery life. With rechargeable lithium ion batteries, that’s great, but it only claims to hold its battery life for 90 minutes. While that’s totally fine for most things, if you’re watching a movie that’s longer than that you’re unable to recharge midway through since the batteries need to actually be taken out to recharge, rather than just plugging the cube in and continuing on with your film.
Ultimately with this product, you get what you’re paying for. For what you pay you get an awesome, really neat and easy to use huge projector, it just have a few setbacks. Ideally this would be great for watching YouTube videos with friends, shows, short movies or even sharing the photos from your vacation that no one wants to see. But maybe if it’s on a 120-inch screen they’ll be more interested.
