Today I would like to introduce you to another independent watchmaker, Romain Gauthier. The company, named after its owner, is relatively new to the watch industry; the company was founded in 2006 and has produced three models so far: the Prestige HM, Prestige HMS, and the latest addition is the Romain Gauthier Logical One watch.
The “Logical One” watch is a stunning piece of mechanical art, the front and the back of the watch proudly showcase the beautiful mechanical movement, I can spend days just staring at it. The Romain Gauthier Logical One watch is not only a looker but it also features some advanced technologies and its movement features three patent-pending technologies.
On the left side of the dial (as you look down onto it), you’ll notice what looks like a bicycle chain. The chain is called “chain-and-fuse” and is a constant force mechanism. What it does is provide constant force from the mainspring to the movement; in a traditional mechanical movement, as the mainspring unwinds, there is a tendency of more force being released from the spring when it’s fully wound and as it unwinds, the force goes down. This has the effect of the watch running fast when it’s fully wound and running slow as the power reserve goes down. The chain-and-fuse avoids that by providing a constant force to the movement, which makes the watch more accurate.
The Romain Gauthier Logical One watches come in either rose gold or titanium cases, measuring 43 mm wide and 14.2 mm thick. The dial is less about time telling and more about showcasing the beautifully carved components of the movement; nevertheless, there still is a sub-dial for the minutes and hours and a smaller dial for seconds, integrated into the minute and hour dial. The front and back of the watch are covered with AR coated sapphire crystal. The crown for setting time is placed at the 2 o’clock position, and there is a large button at the 9 o’clock position that has to be pushed repeatedly to wind the watch, a pretty neat feature and another feature that I could probably spend hours playing with.
The Romain Gauthier Logical One watch is powered by an in-house mechanical movement with a 60 hour power reserve; the movement is made out of titanium, brass, and steel. The watch features 64 jewels (34 in the chain and 30 in the movement) and is water resistant to 50 meters. No word on prices yet but I expect it to be quite pricey.
