I don’t know about the schools in other parts of the world but here in North America, we got to experiment with the “magic” of salt water and making eggs float in elementary school during science class. If there wasn’t so much greed in the world, I’m pretty damn sure that the world would have more than enough clean energy for everyone whether it’s free or extremely affordable. A group of Filipino students have taken things in to their own hands and invented a device to help those who have no access to electricity.
Meet SALt, a home lamp which runs off salt and water or plain sea water. It’s basic science and you get to skip the more expensive kerosene. Just by using 1/3 glass of water and two tablespoons of salt, you are able to get eight hours of light (90 lumens) from a low power LED bulb! This is a more efficient light source when compared to kerosene lamps and candles. Not only is it more efficient but it’s also a lot safer. Unlike candles and kerosene lamps, you don’t have to worry about things catching fire. Inside the SALt lamp, there are no components or materials which may result in causing fire accidents.
The lamp even has a USB slot for charging you phone but unfortunately, you can only do one task at a time. Either provide light or charge your mobile device. I’m sure future models will be able to do both tasks at once.
There is one downside to the unit though, if you were to use the lamp eight hours each day, you would need to replace the reaction unit (anode) every six months which will add to the cost. Use it as an alternative light source and you could make it last up to a year.
The SALt lamp will cost you $35. More details are available at the SALt website.
