Here’s the latest version of Samsung’s smartwatch, dubbed the “Galaxy S”, which will hit store shelves in October. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Gear 2 smartwatches, the Galaxy S features a 2 inch curved LED screen. This wouldn’t be the first time Samsung has used a curved screen, they also sell curved TVs and cellphones.
I think with the curved screen the Galaxy S will sit a bit better on the wrist, I’ve always said these square/rectangular smart watches look awkward on the wrist, maybe the curve will make them look a bit more “natural”?
The Samsung Galaxy S comes with the standard Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity to your smartphone, and it also comes with a 2G and 3G SIM card slot, so you don’t need your phone close to the watch to make it function. According to Samsung, the Galaxy S can be used to make phone calls directly, with its built-in touch-activated QWERTY keypad or using voice-command, and use the email and text messaging features without the need for a phone to be close by.
Like the previous watches, the Galaxy S comes with a variety of apps, including fitness trackers like the Nike+ Running and S Health apps. I currently use the Nike+ app to track my running progress, and it is a major pain in the ass to have my phone in my pocket or holding it in my hand while I’m running. The Galaxy S should make it a lot easier to track my progress with its built-in SIM slot.
Other features and apps on the Samsung Galaxy S include Navigation, Weather, News, Music Player, Photo Gallery, Gyroscope, Accelerometer, and much more. The watches come with customizable dials, although I do like the traditional watch looking dials they have in the photos. The watches come with interchangeable white or black plastic straps.
The Galaxy S smartwatches use the Tizen operating systems and come with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The watches come with a 300mAh lithium-ion batteries, which according to the Korean electronics manufacturer, should last 2 days on a single charge on normal use (standby 300 hours, talk 11 hours, and play time 9 hours). So we’re expecting the battery to last about a day ;). Click here for more information on the Samsung Galaxy S smart watches.
