The Mercedes-AMG GT S

Earlier today we wrote about the new Jaguar XE sports sedan, which didn’t really impress us that much; the same cannot be said about the all-new 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT sports car.

The Mercedes-AMG GT is the replacement for the SLS AMG. The design of the AMG GT does look like it has been inspired by the SLS, minus the gullwing doors. The AMG GT’s design looks like a blend of the car it replaces and the new 991 Porsche 911’s; both of which are very good looking cars and I think the AMG GT looks absolutely stunning.

The Mercedes-AMG GT will come in two flavors: the standard GT and the higher trim GT S. The AMG GT is powered by a newly developed twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 engine (codenamed M178), producing 456 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. 0-60 mph is reached in 3.9 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 189 mph.

The Mercedes-AMG GT S is also powered by the same turbocharged V8 engine, but in the S trim, it produces 503 HP and 479 lb-ft. of torque. 0-60 time is dropped to 3.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 193 mph.

The AMG GT is smaller than the car it replaces, and like its predecessor, makes heavy use of lightweight aluminum in the body and chassis components. The car weighs 3,395 pounds and has a 47/53 front/rear weight distribution.

The interior is pretty cool looking, the four central air vents do a look a bit odd, but other than that I quite like the look of it. There are quite a few buttons on the center console, for the various features like traction control, suspension, and other performance related settings. The interior looks like a mini jet fighter to me.

The Mercedes-AMG GT S will be available in the United States in early 2015, followed by the AMG GT in 2016. Prices are expected to be lower than the outgoing SLS AMG.
