Earlier in the year, we showed you guys Skataz which are motorized roller blades that were in the development stage. The last time I checked, it was still a prototype. While we wait on those, there is another cool project in the works by JP Works, a design consultancy firm based in Los Angeles, CA.
The product they are developing is called spnKiX and they are currently collecting funding for the project over at Kick Starter. The technology being incorporated into these “shoes” can be found on laptops, smart phones, and the latest radio controlled cars. SpnKiX are battery powered, motorized skates which can strap right on to your shoes.
The spnKiX is capable of reaching speeds of up to 10 miles per hour and can be controlled with a wireless remote control about the size of a key fob. The small remote straps to your hand and allows the user to control the throttle via the continuously variable speed control. The electronics and hardware used on the spnKiX are integrated into a frame made out of fiber reinforced nylon. Each skate has a motor and battery pack.
The spnKiX also features removable training wheels for those who may be uncomfortable on motorized skates. The spnKiX will retail for $649 but those who want to pledge money towards the project can pick the motorized skates for $375. The goal of $25,000 has already been reached but you still have until February 2nd, 2012 to pledge and purchase it at the $375 rate. For more details, check out Kick Starter.
