Staying fit on holiday is an uphill battle. When you’re looking to unwind and have fun with your family you may find yourself tempted to give into those temptations that you wouldn’t normally when you’re at home. You might buy some frozen treats on a hot day. You might opt to relax by the pool rather than go for your morning run. Maybe you decide that a couple of beers with your meal aren’t going to hurt anyone. Well, we all have those moments of regret when we discover a newly formed paunch upon returning home. So, if you’re one of the many people that has trouble staying fit on holiday, here are some tips:
Choose fun, active things to do
Being on holiday is supposed to be about having fun, so why not make your exercise routine a bit more fun? Instead of making your daily workout a chore, merge it together with some fun day activities. You could go on a scenic hike around the area instead of your usual morning jog. Maybe there are some water sports available to you that you’ve always wanted to try. The more you mix things up and step away from your routine. The less of a chore exercising will be.
Cook more often
Most of us, when we’re on holiday, are tempted to go out to eat at a restaurant rather than cook at home, but restaurants are one of the main problems you’ll face while you’re trying to stay fit. Cooking at home is a great way to eat healthier, eat less, avoid temptation and save money. Staying away from restaurants is good way of keeping tabs on your alcohol intake and buying local produce is also a great way to get to know the local culture and experiment with your cooking. You may end up discovering some new foods you had never imagined trying in the past, and you can be proud to say that you cooked it yourself.
Dodge to driver’s seat
There’s a lot that we miss while we’re in a car. The world outside our window goes by so quickly that we barely get the time to take it in. So, instead of driving around to all of the places you want to go, try walking instead. Walking around a city or town can be a great experience, especially when you find some hidden gems along the way. Around certain parts of Europe there are even architectural that take you around certain towns and cities to look at historical architecture. Although, you may need to get an EHIC replacement card if you intend to take part. In Italy and Spain especially you’ll likely be doing a lot of steep, uphill walking in high temperatures. Although, if you make it to the end of the tour, you can be glad to know that you definitely deserved a guilt-free gelato.
Staying fit on holiday isn’t about discipline and regime. It’s about making smart choices and being conscious. So, make staying fit fun and make the most of your holiday.
