Bottled water has become a staple throughout the world, with millions of people consuming water from a bottle on a daily basis. Still, tap water is often more convenient when you are at home, and is considered to be more ecologically friendly. However, there are health concerns surrounding the safety of tap water, especially in regions without access to a freshwater source or efficient water-cleaning facilities. So, is it better to drink bottled water or tap water? We looked at some of the research in order to decide.
Where does that bottled water come from?
Many bottles advertise that the water inside has been obtained from a sparkling spring or other untouched source of water. However, studies show that over 25% of bottled water still comes from municipal sources. This means that it is put through the same treatment plants as the ones that provide the water for your tap. If this is the case, you are often paying over a thousand percent premium for the “luxury” of drinking the same water that you can get at home, just because it is in a bottle.
The bottle itself
Many cheaper plastic bottles contain harmful BPAs that can lead to health conditions down the road. Even BPA-free plastic bottles are subject to deterioration and cannot be cleaned as easily as glass. Glass bottles do exist, but they are rarer and generally more expensive. You also have to consider the negative environmental impact that plastic bottles have if they are not recycled properly.
The Verdict: Go with Tap water
Bottled water can be convenient and easy, but there’s no reason to spend the extra money if you don’t have to. As long as you are in an area with water filtration plants and an uncontaminated water supply, tap water is safer, cheaper, and easier to obtain.
